If you have acquired normal residence in Denmark, you will be able to drive while holding your Ukrainian driving licence for up to 180 days. If you wish to continue driving in Denmark after these 180 days, you will have to exchange your driving licence to a Danish driving licence.
An application for an exchange of a foreign driving licence must be handed in at a municipal Citizen service (“Borgerservice”) of your choice.
In order to issue a Danish driving licence, it is a requirement that you have acquired normal residence in Denmark. You are typically considered to have acquired normal residence in Denmark from the time you have settled in Denmark with the intention to stay in the country at least 185 days a year, as a result of your personal or professional affiliation. The assessment of normal residence is done by the municipality when you hand in the application.
If you are assessed as not having normal residence in Denmark, you are not required to exchange your Ukrainian driving licence, and you can consequently continue driving in Denmark with your licence. However, it is a requirement that the driving licence is written in the Latin alphabet or accompanied by a translation in Danish, English or French. The translation must be done by a public authority or organization that is authorized to do so in Ukraine. You can furthermore drive with an international driving licence in Denmark.
Denmark has approved Ukraine as a group 1 country in relation to driving licences. Because of this, persons with a Ukrainian driving licence can exchange the driving licence to a Danish driving licence without undergoing a driving test. However, exchange without a driving test is only possible for driving licences in category B (regular car). In Denmark driving licences in category B permits you to drive tractors, motorized equipment, and mopeds.
When handing in your application for an exchange please bring:
A written sworn statement that you have not been disqualified from driving in the last 5 years, and that your entitlement to drive is not in any other way limited or obtained on special conditions
If you are not able to provide a written sworn statement that you have not been disqualified from driving in the last 5 years, and that your entitlement to drive is not in any other way limited or obtained on special conditions you may still have your driving license exchanged, but on the condition that you pass a driving test.
If your driving license contains more than one category, and you do not wish to solely exchange your Ukrainian driving license to a license for a regular car, you are required to pass a driving test.
A driving test consists of a theoretical and practical test. It is not a requirement that you have received instructions from a driving instructor, but it can be beneficial to receive theoretical and practical instructions from a driving instructor before the driving test.
Note that the municipality can mandate that your driving license is translated into Danish, English or French. The translation must be done by a public authority or organization that is authorized to do so in Ukraine.
